'Weird that we split people by male and female': Neil deGrasse Tyson says gender categories in sports will be eliminated

Astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson said that it is "weird" that men and women are split into different categories for athletics and predicted that in the future humanity will look back at such a decision with confusion.

In other unearthed clips, the scientist said that it's a "failure" in the "evolution of our brain wiring" to categorize things.

Streamrare reported that while on "The Michael Shermer Show," deGrasse Tyson contemplated the reasons why men and women compete in different categories. He suggested that it is strange that differentiations exist for sex and not for other genetic differences such as height.

"It is a little weird that we split people by male and female in this way. I'm imagining a hundred years from now looking back and saying 'do you know back 100 years ago they split boys and girls and they couldn't compete?' and I was like that'd just be kind of a little weird," he stated.

Shermer rebuffed the comment and said that "the differences are so massive on average, again I've seen the pictures of you as a college wrestler, the average woman wrestler is not going to be able to take down you when you were in your peak. Maybe the best female wrestler."

DeGrasse Tyson brushed off Shermer's comments, saying he sounded like "an old man on the porch in a rocking chair right now."

"I'm telling you you are criticizing something that is in need of modification," he claimed. DeGrasse Tyson also argued that height is something "you're born into" but is not a categorical factor in sports, before he stated he doesn't want to regress "to a point that doesn't match who and what we are and how we express ourselves as a species."

In another clip from "The Adam Friedland Show," the popular scientific commentator said that "the human brain wants badly to put things into categories even if they're not inherently categorizable."

"It's a failure of the evolution of our brain wiring to require of things in front of us to fit into categories," he continued."

DeGrasse Tyson was also criticized by Chloe Cole — a woman and former transgender person who de-transitioned and now advocates against trans ideology — for allegedly claiming that genetics cannot sufficiently determine a person's gender.

In an interview with sports commentator Stephen A. Smith in May 2023, deGrasse Tyson said: "Suppose no matter my chromosomes today, 'I feel 80% female, 20% male. I'm gonna put on makeup. Tomorrow, I might feel 80% male. I'll remove the makeup and I'll wear a muscle shirt.' Why do you care?! What businesses is it of yours to require that I fulfill your inability to think of gender on a spectrum?
