Pro-Censorship Activist Caught Flat Footed By Own Tweets At ‘Extremism’ Hearing

Republican South Carolina Rep. Nancy Mace made a transgender activist and censorship advocate Alejandra Caraballo go on the defensive during a series of questions at a House hearing Tuesday.

Caraballo, a “clinical instructor” at Harvard University’s Cyberlaw Clinic, sat as a witness during a House Committee on Oversight and Reform hearing that discussed “The Evolution of Anti-Democratic Extremist Groups and the Ongoing Threat to Democracy.”

“White supremacist ideology undergirds the core tenets of other forms of extremism that have become more prominent in recent years, including conspiracy theories like QAnon, the anti-LGBTQI+ movement, and the election denial and anti-government rhetoric that contributed to the attack on the Capitol on January 6, 2021,” the committee’s website reads.

Mace began by asking panelists “a few simple questions.”

“Do you believe that rhetoric is a way to inflict harm on our democracy?” Mace asked.

All panelists, which included individuals such as Oren Segal, the vice president of the Center on Extremism at the Anti-Defamation League, answered in the affirmative.

Mace also asked if “rhetoric on social media is a problem” and if “rhetoric targeting officials with violence for carrying out their constitutional duties is a threat to democracy.”

Mace then read out a tweet Caraballo wrote June 2022. Caraballo has since deleted the tweet, but it can still be viewed through an internet archive.

“The 6 justices who overturned Roe should never know peace again. It is our civic duty to accost them every time they are in public. They are pariahs. Since women don’t have their rights, these justices should never have a peaceful moment in public again,” the tweet read.

Mace asked Caraballo if she believed the tweet was a “threat to democracy.”

“I don’t believe that’s a correct characterization of my statements,” Caraballo replied.
