Sports Reporter Michele Tafoya Leaves NBC to Move Into Politics So She Can Be “Vocal About World Events”

Michelle Tafoya has announced that she’s leaving NBC and the world of sports journalism to work on the political campaign for MN gubernatorial candidate Kendall Qualls.

Tafoya worked her last NBC game at Sunday’s Super Bowl, and plans to move on to a new chapter in her career in which she can openly discuss political, cultural, and social issues.

“I got to a point in my life where I wanted to try other things,” Tafoya told The Athletic, “and there are some things that are really important to me.” Tafoya made it very clear that this career move was completely her decision, not NBC’s.

“If you’re on a show like ‘Sunday Night Football’,” continued Tafoya, “which is the number one show in prime time for 11 straight years… the last thing they want to do is invite controversy.”

Tafoya identifies as Libertarian, saying “I prefer a smaller government and I’d prefer a lot less of our tax dollars being spent the way that they are. But I remain pro-choice. In a lot of ways, I think there are a lot of choices that should be left up to individuals and not instituted or not forced upon us by a government that we elect, unless we elect them because we want them to make that choice for us. I just don’t think government is about making choices for us in our personal lives. I really don’t. So if that clears it up, then I think it’s probably libertarian.”

Back in November, Tafoya publically fought back on unfounded accusations by “The View” hosts that Colin Kaepernick can’t get a job as an NFL quarterback because of the color of his skin.

While the other hosts of The View were throwing Kaepernick a pity party over how he isn’t on a football team after beginning the trend of kneeling for the national anthem, Tafoya brought a new, unpopular perspective to the conversation.

“A lot of teams have tried him out,” Tafoya said. “He didn’t lose everything, in fact, I would say he’s gained a whole lot. He is now a leader of a movement, he’s got a Netflix series, he’s got Nike endorsements.”

This comment brought on some significant backlash from the other hosts, as well as the media.

Tafoya clearly has some strong opinions and, moving forward with this campaign, she will be able to finally voice her opinions more openly.
