The suspect is reportedly on France’s “S” list, used to designate both Islamic and domestic extremists.

Even the far-left state media, BBC, which previously described the riots that claimed the historic building as “mostly peaceful,” is now admitting that the suspect is “linked to a far-left movement.”

BBC reports:

A suspect linked to a far-left movement has been arrested in France after a 19th Century city hall was gutted by a fire over the weekend that broke out during mass disorder, French media reports.

The clock tower and parts of the roof of the ornate city hall in the central city of Limoges were engulfed in flames before collapsing on Saturday.

The 34-year-old suspect is known to police for acts of violence against public officials and is on the “S” list, a French national security watchlist, FranceInfo and BFMTV reported.

Meanwhile in Marseille, a curfew for young people will be introduced on Tuesday evening.

The outlet further noted that France’s Interior Minister, Laurent Nuñez, has admitted that police across the country have “lost control” amid the chaos.

Still, as reported, the BBC described the riots as “mostly peaceful” on Monday, while showing images of the arson and destruction across France.
