Biden Admin To Spend Over $2 Million To Diversify Marine Biology, Climate Science

The Biden administration’s National Science Foundation (NSF) is dumping more than $2 million in taxpayer funds to back efforts aimed at diversifying marine biology and climate science, deriding the fields as “some of the least diverse STEM disciplines.”

The NSF, which controls $9.9 billion of federal money and exists to “promote the progress of science,” “advance the national health,” and “secure the national defense,” is backing four different universities engaged in the study aimed at diversifying the two scientific disciplines.

“The program supports research and practice projects that investigate how considerations of racial equity factor into the improvement of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics education and workforce,” the program description reads. The study seeks to discover how to develop “equity-driven and anti-racist educational collaborations, infrastructures, and pathways” to implement in the scientific fields, with a specific focus on “BIPOC storytelling and standpoint centering.”

“We are focused on advancing change in structures and sociocultural practices in MCS that can improve their racial equity outcomes,” said Chrystal George Mwangi, an Associate Professor at George Mason University and the principal investigator behind the study. The three-year long study, which began in September of 2023 and will conclude in August of 2026, seeks to build “a replicable and scalable model for equity-centered support in STEM collaborations”

The study claims that the climate and culture in marine and climate sciences “have been identified as actively contributing to the low participation and retention of BIPOC individuals in the disciplines and their disparate academic and professional outcomes, through gatekeeping, professional barriers, and other obstacles.”

George Mason University in Virginia is the biggest recipient of government funding for this effort and is slated to receive a whopping $1.2 million to back the DEI program. Philadelphia, Pennsylvania’s Temple University comes in second and will receive $400,000, while the University of South Carolina will receive another $375,000 from the NSF. Another $327,000 will be given to Salem State University in Massachusetts to fund the DEI effort.

The Biden administration’s NSF is not content with only diversifying marine biology and climate science, however. Another $323,000 will be allocated to Florida International University to “transform engineering classrooms towards racial equity,” a project description explains. “In general, engineering professors are not engaging as active change agents for racial equity in their own classroom,” the grant proposal bemoans, adding that the effort, which will include DEI training for professors, hopes to have a “substantial impact on the formation and professionalization of black, latinx, and indigenous engineers.”

The Daily Wire recently reported that the Biden administration’s NSF pledged to allocate nearly $500,000 to a study on “Latina resistance” at “predominantly white institutions” as well as over $600,000 to back a study on “intra minority solidarity.”

The NSF is far from the only agency within the Biden administration that has embraced far-left ideologies on race and gender. Millions of taxpayer dollars have been allocated to highly ideological DEI efforts as the Biden administration has worked to embed leftwing ideology throughout the government through executive orders.

Daily Wire investigations found that the Department of Defense, for example, spent as much as $270 million on DEI efforts over the course of three years while the State Department spent at least $77 milliontaxpayer dollars on DEI initiatives in 2022 and 2023. The Daily Wire also obtained a DEI glossary from the NSA that included terms like “white fragility,” “queer theory,” and “settler colonialism.”

The National Science Foundation does not appear to be the only agency preoccupied with diversity in marine biology. The Daily Wire recently revealed that the Department of the Interior, tasked with the management and conservation of federal land, screened a documentary on queer representation in marine biology in honor of transgender day of visibility.

Former President Donald Trump has pledged that he will gut the federal bureaucracy through executive orders of his own which aim to remove civil service protections from bureaucrats who occupy a position that impacts policymaking. “We will pass critical reforms making every executive branch employee fireable by the President of the United States,” Trump said at a rally, touting the plan. “The deep state must be brought to heel.”

Biden hopes to preempt this move and recently implemented a policyintended to strengthen the civil service protections enjoyed by federal bureaucrats. Trump and his allies are still preparing to gut the bureaucracy, however, with the Heritage Foundation’s Project 2025assembling a personnel database to take the place of outgoing bureaucrats.
