REPORT: Brazilian Boy Dies After Suffering Seven Heart Attacks Following Scorpion Sting

A seven-year-old Brazilian child reportedly died after suffering seven cardiac arrests, apparently stemming from a scorpion sting that injected poisonous toxins into his foot.

While preparing for a camping trip with his family, Luiz Miguel Furtado Barbosa started screaming in pain from a sting in his foot as he put on his shoes, the New York Post reported. “We were getting ready to go camping, because he loved playing in the water,” his mother, Angelita Proenca Furtado, said, according to Metro.

The family could not initially find where the sting came from, but as the boy’s leg turned red and his pain augmented, they suspected it had been a Brazilian yellow scorpion, according to the NY Post. Furtado and her husband, Eraldo Barbosa, were eventually able to locate the scorpion that had poisoned their son, the outlet continued.

The boy’s parents immediately brought him to the hospital, the NY Post reported. Barbosa’s health allegedly improved on the second day following the sting, when the doctors took him off some medications and he opened his eyes before briefly talking with his mother.

“I kissed him and he had to be sedated again, because he was very agitated,” Furtado said, according to Metro.

Despite the initial reported improvements, Barbosa’s health deteriorated following the subsequent cardiac arrests, the outlet continued. He reportedly died the next day, Oct. 25.

Yellow scorpions’ venom is highly toxic, and its stings are often fatal, according to Metro.
