Raskin Says He Assumes Pence is Going to Voluntarily Testify Before January 6 Committee (VIDEO)

Democrat Rep. Jamie Raskin says that he believes former Vice President Mike Pence is going to voluntarily testify before the January 6 committee.

Raskin discussed Pence during an appearance on Face the Nation on Sunday.

The Maryland congressman and member of the committee said that Pence was “the target of Donald Trump’s wrath and fury” that day.

“Vice President Pence was the target of Donald Trump’s wrath and fury and effort to overthrow the election on January 6, the whole idea was to get Pence to step outside his constitutional role, and then to declare unilateral lawless powers to reject Electoral College votes from the states,” Raskin said.

“I think he has a lot of relevant evidence, and I would hope he would come forward and testify about what happened,” Raskin said.

When asked about if they will compel Pence to testify if he does not choose to do so voluntarily, Raskin did not rule out a subpoena — but said that he does not think it will be necessary.

“I would assume he’s going to come forward and testify voluntarily, the way the vast majority of people have,” Raskin said.

Last month, Pence said that he would consider testifying, but warned that it would be “unprecedented.”

“If there was an invitation to participate, I would consider it,” Pence said while speaking at Saint Anselm College in New Hampshire. “But you’ve heard me mention the Constitution a few times this morning. Under the Constitution, we have three co-equal branches of government. Any invitation to be directed to me, I would have to reflect on the unique role I was serving in as vice president.”

Pence continued on to say that it would be “unprecedented in history for a vice president to be summoned to testify on Capitol Hill, but as I said I don’t want to pre-judge.”

“My first obligation is to continue to hold my oath, continue to uphold the framework of government enshrined in the Constitution,” Pence said.
