Democrat Senator Ed Markey leads congressional delegation to Taiwan less than two weeks after Pelosi's controversial trip there amid rising tensions with China

Another group of U.S. lawmakers are visiting Taiwan over the weekend after China issued a stark warning and began military drills near the island following House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's visit less than two weeks prior.

A five-member delegation, led by Democratic Senator Ed Markey of Massachusetts, are in Taiwan on Sunday and Monday as part of a larger trip through Asia, according to the American Institute in Taiwan.

Pelosi's trip to Taiwan just 12 days before this new trip angered China, leading to Beijing sending missiles, warships and warplanes into the seas and air around Taiwan.

The group will meet senior leaders to discuss U.S.-Taiwan relations, regional security, trade, investment and other issues.

Joining Markey in the small delegation are Democratic Representatives Alan Lowenthal and John Garamendi of California and Don Beyer of Virginia along with Republican Delegate to American Samoa Aumua Amata.

A Taiwanese broadcaster showed video of a U.S. government plane landing about 7 p.m. at Songshan Airport in Taipei, the Taiwanese capital.

She noted that the delegation with meet on its two-day trip with Taiwan's president Tsai Ing-wen, Foreign Minister Joseph Wu and politicians on the self-governed island's Foreign Affairs and Defense committee.

Some of the topics of discussion, the journalist notes in her Sunday morning Twitter thread, are U.S.-Taiwan relations, regional security, trade and investment, global supply chains and climate change.

China claims self-ruled Taiwan as its territory and objects to it having any official contact with foreign governments.

A Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson said in a statement earlier this month that Pelosi's visit to Taiwan 'disregarded China's grave concerns' and was a 'gross interference in China's internal affairs.'

'In response to Pelosi's egregious provocation, China decides to adopt sanctions on Pelosi and her immediate family members in accordance with relevant laws of the People's Republic of China,' the spokesperson added.

Pelosi arrived in Taiwan after days of speculation about whether she would make the trip and potentially intensify tensions with Beijing, which views Taiwan as Chinese territory that will eventually be reunified with the mainland.

The House Speaker became the highest-ranking elected U.S. official to visit Taiwan in decades. It also sparked China launching its largest-ever military exercises surrounding Taiwan.

Ahead of Pelosi's trip, Chinese President Xi Jinping warned in a two-hour call with President Joe Biden that the U.S. would face the wrath of Beijing if she went to Taiwan.

Chinese state media released some excerpts from the July call, where the Chinese leader was quoted as saying: 'Those who play with fire will only get burnt. Hope the US side can see this clearly.'
