Woman gives birth on sidewalk, leaves newborn there, soon is seen 'stumbling away' with 'blood and amniotic fluid all over her': Police

Portland police on Wednesday morning got a call about a woman who gave birth on a sidewalk near S.W. 13th and Market Streets and then left the newborn there, KOIN-TV reported.

What are the details?

Officer Kirby-Glatkowski and his partner were patrolling the area in search of a serial burglar when they got the call, the station said, adding that community members who saw the incident take place immediately covered the baby and called 911.

“It’s a cold day, it wasn’t raining at that moment, but it was raining earlier and the sidewalk at Southwest 13th and Market is no place to deliver a baby alone,” Kirby-Glatkowski told KOIN.

When the officers arrived, paramedics began evaluating the newborn's health, the station said.

“They said the mother, the woman, was stumbling away eastbound on Market with a lot of blood and amniotic fluid all over her,” Kirby-Glatkowski added to KOIN.

Police told the station that officers "caught up with the mother nearby,” and soon she was placed on a hold for a mental health evaluation, after which she and her newborn girl were taken to a hospital by ambulance.

Fortunately, Kirby-Glatkowski and his partner also are part of the police department's Enhanced Crisis Intervention Team and are trained to assist those in mental crisis, KOIN said.

Anything else?

Police told the station they're still working to learn more about the woman and the circumstances the led to the incident — and that the department's Behavioral Health Unit has been in touch with her in the past.
