Biden admin describes Florida legislation that would ban most abortions after 15 weeks of pregnancy as 'dangerous' and 'extreme'

 The Biden administration is denouncing legislation passed by the Florida state legislature that would ban most abortions after 15 weeks of pregnancy.

The bill would take effect July 1 if signed by GOP Gov. Ron DeSantis, who has indicated that he will sign it.

"Last night, the Republican-controlled Florida legislature passed a dangerous bill that will severely restrict women’s access to reproductive health care. My Administration will not stand for the continued erosion of women’s constitutional rights," a tweet on President Joe Biden's @POTUS account declared.

DeSantis press secretary Christina Pushaw fired back, tweeting, "Why didn’t you mention that this bill is about protecting unborn babies AFTER 15 weeks? That is when they can already feel pain and they’re getting close to viability. Babies have been born at 20 weeks and survived. What you’re arguing for is unfettered LATE TERM abortion."

The bill includes exceptions if an abortion is deemed "necessary to save the pregnant woman's life or avert a serious risk of substantial and irreversible physical impairment of a major bodily function of the pregnant woman other than a psychological condition," or if the unborn child has not yet reached viability and is deemed to have "a fatal fetal abnormality."

The legislation does not include exceptions for pregnancies resulting from rape or incest.

Vice President Kamala Harris also criticized the legislation in a statement, describing the bill as "extreme by any standard."
