World junior shooting champion, 19, dies after accidentally shooting himself in the stomach when bending over to pick up spent cartridges while hunting in Italy

 Italy's world junior shooting champion has died after accidentally shooting himself in the stomach when bending over to pick up spent cartridges. 

Cristian Ghilli, 19, shot himself in a hunting accident near Pisa and died at around 10pm yesterday in a hospital at Cecina in Tuscany. 

The world junior skeet (clay pigeon shooting) champion was given an emergency operation to try and stop the internal bleeding. 

But doctors were unable to save him and he died.

Mr Ghilli had been hunting with friends in the woods at Montecatini Val di Cecina, in the province of Pisa, when he accidentally shot himself.

His friends called emergency services when they saw what happened and two ambulances arrived to rush him to the hospital. 

He was operated on as soon as he arrived but died.

The president of the Italian Shooting Federation, Luciano Rossi, said, according to local media: 'Last October the young skeet player was crowned World Champion in teams and in the Mixed Team, accompanying the gold with a third individual place in the World Cup in Lima, Peru. 

'In May 2021 he had won gold in the individual, team and Mixed Team competition in the European Championship in Osjiek in Croatia. 

'With respect, silence, condolences in the face of a tragedy that leaves everyone upset. May the earth be light to you, Cristian.'
