Shocking moment three Bronx muggers shoot man dead and wound his friend in sidewalk robbery as NYC crime soars

Police in New York City are seeking a trio of muggers who killed one man and injured another in a sidewalk hold-up, as violent crime continues to wrack the city.

The cold-blooded murder occurred at around 4.50pm on Saturday in the Mount Eden section of the Bronx, where three unidentified men stuck up Jonathan Pena, 32, and a 46-year-old man.

Two of the muggers pointed pistols at the victim, one augmented with a green laser sight and another with what appears to be a high-capacity drum magazine, surveillance video shows.

The third stickup man then rushed over to the victims, who raised their hands in the air, and ripped a gold chain away from Pena.

As the robbers were distracted with the chain, the other victim tried to flee inside a nearby restaurant.

The muggers then opened fire with both guns, shooting wildly on the 1400 block of Macombs Road and hitting both victims.

The trio of crooks was last seen fleeing northbound on Macombs Road in a black Mercedes-Benz sedan.

Pena was transported by private means to Bronx Lebanon Hospital where he was pronounced dead police said.

Paramedics transported the 46-year-old male victim to Lincoln Hospital in stable condition.

The brazen murder comes as New York City continues to grapple with a surge in violent crime.

On Thursday morning, a 27-year-old female jogger was strangled unconscious and raped in Central Park, near Swan Lake.

Paulie Velez, 25, was arrested and charged in the attack after police said he tried to sell the victim's cell phone in a Times Square store.

The Central Park attack took place only 25 minutes before a registered sex offender attempted to rape a woman on Randall's Island and 45 minutes before another victim was sexually assaulted on a walking trail by the Harlem River.

Howard Shaw, 38, was charged over the Randall's Island assault - which took place two days after he was released from state prison where he was serving a sentence for a 2005 robbery and a rape.

Meanwhile, New York City also continues to see a surge in other types of violent crime.

Through the end of October, felony assaults rose 8 percent from last year, to 18,898, and grand larcenies increased 3.7 percent, to 30,768.

Murders dropped slightly, to 399 so far this year from last year's level of 407.

Rapes are up 2.1 percent on the year, at 1,241, and robberies rose 1.6 percent to 10,996.

NYPD Police Commissioner Dermot Shea has repeatedly made public calls on lawmakers to stiffen bail laws that were reformed last year, allowing many suspects to walk free without bond.

'Effective crime fighting is predicated upon a collaborative effort from all aspects of the criminal justice landscape – as well as society as a whole,' he said earlier this month.

'Additionally, our brave officers’ work must be reinforced by meaningful consequences that send a consequential message to those who find themselves on the path toward criminality.'
