House select committee investigating the Capitol riot announces its first public hearing for July 27: Lawmakers to hear from cops as GOP leader said he may not appoint any members to panel

The special House committee investigating the January 6th MAGA riot on the Capitol will hold its first hearing on Tuesday, July 27.

The House Select Committee to Investigate the January 6th Attack on the U.S. Capitol will hear from Capitol Police officers on duty that day. The names of the officers testifying have not been released.

Speaker Nancy Pelosi named eight lawmakers to the panel in early July, including Chairman Bennie Thompson and GOP Rep. Liz Cheney, who was one of 10 Republicans to vote for the second impeachment of Donald Trump for his role in instigating the riot.

House Republican Leader Kevin McCarthy has yet to name any Republicans to the panel.

Republicans argue that existing committee probes as well as prosecutors' investigations make an outside commission or a select committee unnecessary. More than 500 people have been charged with taking part in the violence. More than 300 suspects are still being sought by the FBI.

Some Republicans lawmakers also have pushed for US Capitol Police to release the name of the officer who shot Ashli Babbitt, an Air Force veteran who tried to leap through a window of the Capitol on January 6th. The officer was cleared of any wrongdoing by prosecutors.  Trump also has pushed for the release of the officer's name.

Hundreds of Trump supporters stormed the Capitol on January 6th in an unsuccessful attempt to stop Congress from certifying President Joe Biden's election win. The violence left five dead, including a Capitol Police officer.

McCarthy said on Tuesday he has not decided on whom to name to the select committee or even whether he would appoint any fellow Republicans.

'I haven't made a decision yet, even to appoint,' McCarthy told Fox News. 'I'm discussing it with my members. I have a real concern, the scope of what we're looking at.'

McCarthy was critical of both Cheney and Pelosi after the speaker appointed the Wyoming Republican to the panel.

'I was shocked that she would accept something from Speaker Pelosi,' he said earlier this month after Pelosi named Cheney.

'It would seem to me is, since I didn't hear from her, maybe she's closer to her than us,' he continued in claiming Cheney might be more aligned with Pelosi now than her fellow Republicans in Congress.

Cheney has repeatedly said she was doing her duty to the nation with her vote to impeach Trump.

'Our oath to the Constitution, our duty, our dedication to the rule of law and the peaceful transfer of power has to come above any concern about partisanship or about politics,' she said after being named to the panel.

'We have an obligation to have a thorough, sober investigation of what happened leading up to January 6 and the attack on the Capitol that day,' she added.
