NYPD hate crimes unit hunts subway passenger seen on video brutally beating an Asian man and putting him in a chokehold 'after he called him the N-word'

New York City police are hunting a subway passenger seen on video brutally beating an Asian man and putting him in a chokehold in Brooklyn.

The NYPD’s hate crimes unit tweeted footage from the incident Monday.

It is unclear when the assault occurred but it believed to have taken place on a Manhattan-bound J train. The condition of the man assaulted is not known.

No one steps in to help to the attack, according to the footage. Police said: 'We need the public's help. The NYPD is aware of this video and is investigating.'

There has been a wave of high-profile and sometimes deadly assaults against Asian Americans since the COVD-19 pandemic began. Protesters have taken to the streets in response what many said has become a troubling surge of anti-Asian sentiments.

DailyMail.com has contacted police for more information.

A witness to the incident can be heard telling fellow passengers at the end of the clip that the victim had called the suspect the N-word before he was attacked.

The footage begins with the two men already trading blows as others on the subway train watch on.

The victim is eventually knocked down by his attacker after being punched more than 10 times before being held in a chokehold and appearing to fall unconscious.

Others call for the assault to stop, with one witness calling out 'he’s sleeping' as the man falls unconscious. The victim falls to the floor as the suspect leaves the train.

At the end of the video a witness can be heard saying 'he called him the N-word'.
