Police are currently investigating the incident as the gunman remains at large and a motive is yet to be determined, reports the LA Times.
Authorities are yet to release any further information surrounding the case, however it is believed that Magana suffered at least one gunshot wound.
It is unconfirmed whether Magana's boyfriend and son were harmed in the shooting.
Nancy and her boyfriend were allegedly sat side-by-side in the front of the car while her son remained sat in the backseat.
The victim had just completed her second week of full-time teaching math at Del Vallejo Middle School, where she was also a volleyball coach.
Nancy's Maria Magaña, 29, has since claimed that she believes the attack 'came out of nowhere', and said she has no idea why someone would do this.
She said that Nancy chose to teach middle school children because she felt she would be able to reach out and motivate kids of that age.
Maria added: 'Imagine how many kids she could have reached? 'The amount of lives [impacted] are uncounted.'
Maria said that her sister was generous, intelligent and always saw the positives in situations, she added that her son was the center of her world.
She revealed that the mother and son would always go on outings together to parks, the beach, and Disneyland and had plans to visit the Grand Canyon this year.
Although she was a single mother and had to juggle her son with her career, she apparently spent hours studying in order to achieve her teaching credentials.
Maria said: 'She lived paycheck to paycheck, going to school and finishing her teaching credential. This is why we're so distraught. She meant a lot to so many people.'
Magana enjoyed soccer and was an alumni member of the Valley Soccer family, her team shared a heartfelt tribute on their Facebook page.
It said: 'It is with overwhelming sadness that I share that a member of our F.A.M.I.L.Y., alumna goalkeeper Nancy Magana of Arroyo Valley High School lost her life in the early hours of Saturday morning.
'Nancy played for our squad in 2012 and is remembered as a positive, caring person who always had a smile on her face.
'Even during our most grueling goalkeeper sessions. She is an absolute success story, graduating from SBVC with her AA degree and most recently graduating from CSUSB and obtaining a teaching credential.
'She just began her first year of teaching at Del Vallejo Middle School in San Bernardino where she hoped to have a positive impact on the lives of the children in our community.
'I have spoken with her family, her older sister Maria is also an alum of our soccer program. At this time we have more questions than answers but please keep Maria, Nancy's son and their entire family in your hearts, thoughts and prayers.
'If details emerge about a possible service for Nancy or a fund to help raise money to cover costs and support her son, I will share that information on our page as well.'
Tributes also flooded in on Facebook from friends, one read: ' Nancy Magana R.I.P Love we went to school together your mom was my Spanish teacher in elementary, you taught me a little math in school..
'I walked with you your sisters home , we went to the the same elementary middle school and high school , I'll be missing you , peace and love to you your family... watch over them. God bless you!'
