Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez was supposed to be the young savior of the Democratic Party. Instead, she seems to be falling on her face.
Ocasio-Cortez, of course, is the democratic socialist from New York who pulled off an upset win in the 2018 congressional midterm elections. Although she had zero track record, she was quickly held up as a power player for the Democrats, flying around the country to campaign with the likes of Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders.
But she’s finding out that there’s a lot more to being a lawmaker than having a nice smile and spitting out nonsensical answers on television (although admittedly, she’s a master at that). The Democratic wunderkind is so far nothing but a dud when it comes to actual accomplishments.
On Tuesday, the Senate voted on that chamber’s version of Ocasio-Cortez’s signature legislation, the Green New Deal, a sweeping environmental package that was touted by the congresswoman as vital to keeping us all from dying in 12 years.
It … did not go well.
Although prominent Democrats including 2020 presidential hopefuls Sens. Kamala Harris of California and Cory Booker of New Jersey previously said they supported the Green New Deal — with Booker comparing it to fighting Nazis — not a single Democrat voted in support of the bill.
In fact, a handful of Democrats voted against it, with the rest — 42 Dems and the independent Bernie Sanders — all voting “present.” It appeared to be a face-saving move by Democrats who knew that tying their names to a disastrous bill costing trillions of dollars would have been career suicide.
That was a breath of fresh air and a much-needed confirmation that perhaps the entire country hasn’t lost its proverbial mind. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., summarized the failed vote well, and even released a video teasing Ocasio-Cortez for her legislative disaster.

“The American people will see, they will see which of their senators can do the common sense thing and vote ‘no’ on this destructive socialist daydream,” McConnell said, according to The Hill. “And they will see which senators are so fully committed to radical left-wing ideology that they can’t even vote no on self-inflicted economic ruin.”
And indeed, the American people spoke out after the vote. Social media exploded with posts mocking the Green New Deal and Ocasio-Cortez, especially when she bizarrely claimed that she had encouraged fellow Democrats not to vote for her own legislation.
“Looks like socialism isn’t as popular as you make it seem,” TurningPointUSA founder Charlie Kirk posted on Twitter.
Hey @AOC your green new deal just got ZERO votes in the Senate

“Does anyone really believe that US Senators care how a freshman rep tells them to vote?” wondered journalist David Harsanyi.
Ocasio-Cortez took a shot at Sen. Mike Lee, R-Utah, who hilariously mocked the Green New Deal on the Senate floor. “If this guy can be Senator, you can do anything,” she tweeted.
Conservative pundit Allie Beth Stuckey responded with a proposal that the congresswoman debate him. “Surely you wouldn’t hesitate to do so if he’s really as dumb as you say,” Stuckey said.
Plenty of others also chimed in.

The GOP’s whole game of wasting votes in Congress to target others “on the record”, for leg they have no intent to pass, is a disgrace.

Stop wasting the American peoples’ time + learn to govern. Our jobs aren’t for campaigning, & that’s exactly what these bluff-votes are for.
If the Green New Deal was a serious proposal, instead of a stunt, wouldn’t you want the Senate to vote on it?
But it was perhaps conservative pundit Ben Shapiro who took the cake with his trademark wry wit.
“I was reliably informed that the Green New Deal was both incredibly popular and deeply necessary to save the planet,” he tweeted.
“Yet not a single Democrat voted for it. Clearly they do not care about the children,” Shapiro said. “We’re all dead in 12 years, guys.”

Something tells us the world will still be here in a dozen years even without Ocasio-Cortez’s Green New Deal — and if the response to her monstrosity of a bill is any sign, the United States of America will be just fine, too.
