Ukriane’s President Zelenskyy Calls for More Comprehensive Peace Talks with Russia

Once again, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has made a call for a comprehensive peace talk with Russia’s Vladimir Putin.

Both the presidents of Ukraine and Russia, currently engulfed in war, have called for peace several times. However, the two have yet to see eye-to-eye on demands.

What differs this time is that the call for peace talks comes from Ukraine right after Russian hypersonic missiles destroyed a warehouse reportedly full of aviation equipment and munitions. Along with this, a barracks containing 200 sleeping Ukrainian soldiers was also hit. Thus, striking a critical blow to Ukraine’s war effort.

A quote from Ukraine’s President Zelenskyy, from SkyNews:

“We were also insisting on the negotiations. We were always offering dialogue for a solution for peace, not only during the 23 days of invasion, and I want everyone to hear me now–especially in Moscow. The time has come for a meeting. It is time to talk. The time has come to restore territorial integrity and justice for Ukraine, otherwise Russia’s losses will be such, that it will take you several generations to recover.”

A Ukrainian citizen is also quoted as referring to the Russian attacks in cities as “hell from the sky” and “complete extermination,” while another Ukrainian officer makes appeals to the corrupt and ineffective “leaders” Macron, in France, and Biden, in the United States to provide air support.

The threat from Zelenskyy comes after a painful military blow in the loss of the barracks and warehouse, however he appears to be speaking out of anger alongside a sincere belief that Ukraine can fend off Russia’s invasion. Whether this is truly the case, however, is yet to be seen.

So far each round of peace talks has net nothing, with Ukraine rejecting Russian demands as being “ridiculous” and too steep.

Zelenskyy’s call for peace this time comes from a demanding, threatening place itself, and no matter who you root for in this war–Russia or Ukraine–it would be naive to expect it to result in much.  Putin demands the independence of the Donbas region and the demilitarization of “Nazi” Ukraine, while Ukraine demands for its sovereignty to be respected and likely they desire a guarantee of Western protection in the event of any future invasion–which Moscow is unlikely to find palatable.

Zelenskyy currently awaits responses from Putin and other world leaders.
