Two ‘Defund the Police’ Democrats In Two Blue States Get Carjacked At Gunpoint On Same Day

Pennsylvania Congresswoman Mary Scanlon and Illinois State Senator Kimberly Lightford, both Democrats who supported police reform, were carjacked on Tuesday just hours apart from one another in Philadelphia and Chicago.

Lightford was carjacked at gunpoint on Tuesday night while driving with her husband in a Chicago suburb. Lightford’s husband was driving their Mercedes Benz when three masked men approached and fired multiple gunshots at him. Lightford’s husband, however, was not injured.

Lightford said thanked the Broadview police department for their “quick and thorough response”.

Less than 24 hours later in Philadelphia, Congresswoman Scanlon’s vehicle was stolen in a carjacking in broad daylight. While walking to her car, Scanlon was approached by two armed men who demanded the keys and then drove off in her car. Scanlon was not injured, and five suspects have been taken into custody after the police recovered the stolen vehicle.

Although Scanlon did not thank the police herself, her office said she “thanks the Philadelphia Police Department for their swift response”.

City Councilman Kenyatta Johnson, whose district this carjacking occurring in, says this type of crime is happening at all times of the day in the city. “Right now in the City of Philadelphia, people feel like there’s a sense of lawlessness,” said Johnson. “At the end of the day, you see carjackings taking place during the holiday season. We see people being robbed of their Rolexes, so at the end of the day, we have to figure out how do we get ahold of this senseless violence.”

Both women have been vocal supporters of police reform, co-sponsoring bills to allow mental health specialists to replace police officers as first responders in some instances. Lightfoot also slashed Chicago PD’s budget by $59 million in 2020.

This week, both of these Democrat leaders experienced what happens when you work to undermine and defund the police. Luckily, no one was injured as a result.

As crime surges in their cities, perhaps more leaders will recognize the importance of maintaining law and order in the US.
