Conservative pundit Candace Owens attacks Alec Baldwin over accidental shooting calling it 'poetic justice' for his previous criticism of Donald Trump

Candace Owens has sparked a huge backlash after claiming Alec Baldwin's accidental shooting was 'poetic justice' following the actor's criticism of Donald Trump.

The conservative pundit, 32, has since deleted her provocative tweets and Instagram posts after criticizing Baldwin over the shooting that killed cinematographer Halyna Hutchins.

Owens wrote: 'Alec Baldwin spent 4 years dedicated to painting Donald Trump and his supporters as evil murderers.

'What has happened to Alec would be an example of poetic justice if it weren't for the actual innocent people that were murdered by him. Pray for their families. So sad.'

The right-wing talk show host then added: 'Will correct that last tweet to say Alec Baldwin *killed* someone- not murdered someone, as murder carries a different legal definition.

'Literally not one single thing that Alec Baldwin has said about Donald Trump and his supporters is going to age well.'

Owens' remarks prompted fury online, with many accusing her of trying to profit politically from the tragic death of Hutchins.

One person called the commentator 'spineless' and said the tweets were 'below her'.

Another wrote that her response to the tragedy was 'tasteless', saying Baldwin's politics had no bearing on the shooting.

Baldwin, a lifelong Democrat, played Trump on SNL and once referred to the president and his supporters as a 'gallery of monsters'.

The 30 Rock star also went on a rant about how Trump was causing a 'moral collapse of the US' and compared him to Adolf Hitler.

He wrote after the 2020 election: 'Bury Trump in a Nazi graveyard and put a swastika on his grave. The majority of Americans made the right choice. Trump is a maniac.'

His SNL impressions upset the president who blasted in 2019: 'Nothing funny about tired Saturday Night Live on Fake News NBC!'

'Question is, how do the Networks get away with these total Republican hit jobs without retribution? Likewise for many other shows? Very unfair and should be looked into. This is the real Collusion!'

Trump was responding to a typically caustic sketch by Baldwin from the previous night during the border emergency.

Baldwin joked: 'We have a tremendous amount of drugs flowing into the country from the southern border – or the brown line, as many people have asked me not to call it.

'That’s why we need wall. Because wall works. Wall makes safe.'

Owens has previously landed herself in hot water on numerous occasions for her controversial comments.

She claimed baselessly that the 2018 mail bombing attempts that targeted prominent Democrats were being orchestrated by leftists, before a Trump supporter was arrested.

She deleted her tweets and offered no further explanation.

Owens has also pushed antivaxx conspiracy theories and was embroiled in a high-profile spat with rapper Cardi B.

Following the shooting, Baldwin said in a Twitter statement: 'There are no words to convey my shock and sadness regarding the tragic accident that took the life of Halyna Hutchins, a wife, mother and deeply admired colleague of ours.

'I'm fully cooperating with the police investigation to address how this tragedy occurred and I am in touch with her husband, offering my support to him and his family.

'My heart is broken for her husband, their son, and all who knew and loved Halyna.'

The actor was reportedly 'hysterical and absolutely inconsolable for hours' after the accidental shooting and is now looking 'to take some time to himself and re-center himself'.

Matthew Hutchins tweeted a photo of his wife and their nine-year-old son Andros on Friday captioned: 'Halyna inspired us all with her passion and vision, and her legacy is too meaningful to encapsulate in words.

'Our loss is enormous, and we ask that the media please respect my family's privacy as we process our grief. We thank everyone for sharing images and stories of her life.'
