'Over the course of a few years, the defendant raped at least three young girls,' the district attorney's office said in a statement. 'This is a person that has absolutely no regard for the safety of others, and preys on vulnerable and innocent victims to gratify is own sexual pleasures.'

Kapuscinski sparked outrage in 2015 when he was allowed to participate in an on-campus volleyball tournament at the University of New Mexico following his arrest. According to local station KRQE, that tournament also included young girls.

'That's very scary,' UNM student Michelle Delaney told KRQE in 2015.

'I'd definitely be uncomfortable, especially when I know that children are around him,' said George Quintero.

Following the uproar, a UNM spokesperson explained the decision to allow Kapuscinski to play in the tournament.

'He was allowed to register for the event because he is an active student at the university with all the rights and privileges of being a student,' read the email to KRQE.

According to KRQE, Kapuscinski was prohibited from being near his victim or any witnesses from his 2014 trial, but was not barred from being around other children.
