Police say the gunmen approached a group playing basketball and began shooting at them unprovoked before fleeing the scene.

While speaking to reporters at the scene MDPD detective Angel Rodriguez made a plea to the public to stop the violence, WSVN reports.

'This is a senseless, heinous crime. There were adults, children, families, trying to share and trying to have a good time at a park on a Sunday before returning to school on Monday,' he said.

He encouraged people who may have any information which could help with their enquiries to get in contact.
