As The CW show Supernatural heads toward its series finale after 15 years on air, longtime fans are celebrating and despairing a double plot twist in the third-to-last episode.

The whiplash-inducing end of their relationship has many viewers feeling heartbroken, but a few are furious that the show confirmed the gay romance before immediately taking it away.

So in his final moments, Castiel tells Dean, 'I love you.'
The admission came after fans 'shipped' — that is, rooted for a romantic relationship between — Castiel and Dean for years, giving them the couple portmanteau 'Destiel.'
Some have been convinced of romantic feelings there, but despite hints, it had never been confirmed in Castiel's 12 years on the drama.
Now that it's become 'canon,' a phrase used to describe an official storyline or plot in a piece of fiction, but ended before anything could happen, fans are feeling overwhelmed.

But others are furious, going so far as to call it 'homophobic' that when the show's first gay love story was finally confirmed, it didn't actually play out.

Meanwhile, Misha Collins, who played Castiel, told Entertainment Tonight the ending is exactly how he would have wanted it.
'I knew the ending that he was going to meet with for about a year, and I was really happy about it. And I'm still happy about it,' he said.
'It feels important. It feels like it makes his arc on the show meaningful, not just in terms of the mythology of the show, but in terms of a message for the greater world and our particular moment in history. I'm very happy with it.'
However, he did admit that that filming the scene was emotional.
'Castiel's last scene in the show was also my last scene shooting. So it had this double poignancy for me. I was saying goodbye to the cast and the crew at the same time that they were saying goodbye to Castiel,' he said.
