Obama is dubbed an 'ego maniac' and 'narcissist' after audio edition of his new memoir runs for a whopping 29 HOURS - as he defends book's length and jokes that it sold 'a tad more' than his wife Michelle's on first day

Barack Obama has been described as an 'ego maniac' after it was revealed that the audio book edition of his new memoir runs for a whopping 29 hours, before he defended his book and joked it sold a 'tad more' than Michelle's on the first day.

The tome, titled A Promised Land, was released on Tuesday, and has already sold more than one million copies when audio book sales are added to the count.

And while many have praised the detailed autobiography, others have been left stunned by the fact it will take them more than an entire day to listen to it.

On Twitter, the former president has been described as 'self-centered', a 'narcissist', and 'a legend in his own mind' over the lengthy run time.

Fox News pundit Tucker Carlson chimed in during a segment on his show Thursday night, pointing out that A Promised Land - which is 768 pages long - is the second memoir that the former president has written.

On Thursday night, Obama appeared on NBC's Jummy Kimmel Live, where he defended the length of his book, saying when he started writing he didn't intend for it to reach the final page count.

He also bragged to the host that his book sold 'a tad more' than former first lady Michelle Obama's book 'Becoming', which was recognized as 2018's fastest selling book, selling 725,000 copies on the first day of publication.

Obama, 59, previously penned the 1995 bestseller, Dreams From My Father: A Story of Race and Inheritance.

'Two autobiographies before you're 60? It's safe to say he doesn't have a self-esteem problem,' Carlson tartly stated.

Obama is now in the process of writing a third memoir, which will detail the later part of his presidency. It will be released sometime in the next few years.

Meanwhile, comedian Adam Carolla appeared on Carlson's program and stated: 'Obama is a bigger narcissist than Trump!'

'I was only able to listen to the first 17 hours on the toilet this morning,' he joked.

In his Thursday night appearance on Jimmy Kimmel's show, the former president was jokingly asked by the host 'Did you make it that long to make sure Trump never reads it?'

'I don't think it would have had to be 700 pages,' Obama joked in response, going onto to explain he didn't intend for the book to be so long, but that he wanted to explain a range of thing from his presidency in detail.

'I want people to understand how I was making decisions, what we were dealing with... I didn't want to put everything in footnotes and endnotes,' he said, confessing that he tends to skip footnotes when he finds them in books.

Kimmel went on to ask his guest whether his book old more than Michelle Obama's 'Becoming' in 2018 on its opening. Obama's book sold 'a tad more', he joked.

'But I'm not rubbing it in over dinner,' he added, saying Michelle joked that the more books he sells, the more he can help pay for her shoe purchases.

Despite the success of his book, Obama quipped that his daughters Sasha and Malia are not interested in reading their father's memoir.

'You are never a profit in your own land. Their attitude is "we got better things to do than read your boring rants and raves,"' he said.

On Twitter, the run time of the A Promised Land audio book also sparked a flurry of tweets.

'@BarackObama's memoir is 29 hours on @audible and it's only the first volume covering just his first term. @MichelleObama's covers her entire life in 19 hours! What's Barry so long-winded about?' one asked.

Meghan McCain's husband, Ben Domenech, also chimed in, stating: 'I realize 19 hours of Barack Obama talking about himself may seem like a problem, but don't worry, it's just Volume 1.'

However, others are thrilled to be listening to Obama for hour after hour.

'19 hours of pure bliss,' one cooed.

Another wrote: 'Just used my crisp new Audible credit to buy the new @BarackObama book and it's 29 hours of that voice, you guys. TWENTY-NINE HOURS. Whatever is ailing me will surely be cured by the end.'
