Mystery surrounds shooting of married prosecutors after wife is shot dead at their El Paso home on their 22nd wedding anniversary and husband is in a critical condition

A Texas lawyer was killed and her attorney husband wounded in their home by an unknown gunman, while their teenage son was away at a fencing competition.

Assistant attorney general Georgette G. Kaufman, 50, and attorney Daniel L. Kaufman, 47, of El Paso, Texas, were shot at their home in El Paso's Manhattan Heights neighborhood on November 14 at about 7.35pm.

Police responding to the scene found Georgette, nicknamed Gigi, dead at the rear of the Kaufman home, while Daniel was found wounded at a neighbor's house, the El Paso Times reported.

Daniel, who was shot multiple times, was taken to the hospital for treatment.

Police said in a statement Wednesday he is in critical, but stable condition.

Their 16-year-old son was not at home at the time of the shooting, because he was at a fencing tournament in Dallas at the time, KVIA reported. He has been staying with a relative since he returned to El Paso on Sunday.

The shooting occurred one day after the couple celebrated their 22nd wedding anniversary, according to the El Paso Times.

Police said in their statement that there was 'no indication at present time that any other person was the intended victim of this crime.'

No arrests have been made in the shooting and police have not released any information about a suspect or a possible motive.

The Texas Attorney General's Office said that Georgette Kaufmann, also known as Georgette Garcia-Kaufman, had been an assistant attorney general with the Office of Attorney General Child Support Division in El Paso since 2013.

A spokesman with the office told the El Paso Times that Georgette had worked on court cases involving the establishment and enforcement of child support.

Daniel, meanwhile, had been an assistant attorney general with the office's child support division from 2010 to 2014 and from 2016 to May 2019.

He was then hired by El Paso County, where he is now an attorney for the El Paso Domestic Relations Office, handling child support enforcement cases.

In addition, Kaufmann also practices as a family law attorney, handling divorce and child custody cases, among other issues.

Georgette's death is now the second death that occurred at the Kaufman home.

In November 2018, Javier Tellez Jr., 28, bled to death after he cut his arms on window glass while breaking into their home.

The Kaufmans called police when they saw blood and the broken window and officers found Tellez dead inside their home.

Anyone with information on the November 14 Kaufman shooting is asked to call El Paso police at 915-832-4400 or Crime Stoppers of El Paso at 915-566-8477 (TIPS).
