Kentucky man, 26, 'who shot and injured two cops during Breonna Taylor protests' is indicted on 35 charges - including two counts of assault and 33 counts of wanton endangerment

A Kentucky man who was accused of opening fire and shooting two police officers during protests over the killing of Breonna Taylor has been indicted.

Larynzo Johnson, 26, was indicted by a Jefferson County grand jury on two counts of first-degree assault and 33 counts of first-degree wanton endangerment.

He is being held on $1million bond and is scheduled for arraignment on November 23.

Johnson was accused of firing shots at police officers on September 23 during unrest after a grand jury process led by State Attorney General Daniel Cameron produced no charges involving the shooting of Taylor by police.

Instead, prosecutors announced a single officer - Brett Hankinson - had been indicted on charges of wanton endangerment for firing into a home next to Taylor's.

Video footage recorded during the protest in Louisville showed a man in a multicolored hoodie, later identified as Johnson, waving a handgun wildly, reaching over the head of another protester and opening fire.

One witness to the shooting said police deployed a flash-bang to disperse the crowd, and another protester came up behind him and opened fire just feet away.

'I heard two gun shots right behind me, I turned around, this all happened within a second or two,' the witness, who asked not to be named, told WLKY-TV.

A press release from Commonwealth's Attorney Thomas Wine said Johnson endangered protesters while wounding two officers.

Louisville Metro Police Officer Robinson Desroches was shot in the abdomen and underwent surgery. He remained hospitalized for two weeks and was discharged home in early October.

Hundreds of protesters took the the streets of Louisville after a grand jury process produced no charges involving the shooting of Breonna Taylor by police.

Maj. Aubrey Gregory was shot in the hip and was released from the hospital the following day. He then held a briefing, calling for a de-escalation of tensions between protesters and the police.

'Hate and violence progresses nothing,' Gregory stated. 'It's only when we can come together in mutual respect and love that we can communicate in an effective way and we can make real change.'

Johnson was originally charged with 14 counts of wanton endangerment, 'all directed against police officers,' then-interim Chief Robert Schroeder previously said. He pleaded not guilty.
