'There's no point in wearing gloves if you're not going to wash your hands!': Ex-nurse posts video showing how germs spread

Wearing gloves to stop the spread of the coronavirus is helpful, but it is completely useless if people do not frequently wash their hands, according to a former emergency nurse.
Molly Lixey of Saginaw, Michigan, posted an instructional video on her Facebook page demonstrating how cross-contamination leaves people susceptible to viral germs even if they are wearing gloves.
Lixey said that while it was comforting to see people wearing gloves during a recent trip to the local supermarket, she noticed that shoppers were also unaware of just how easily germs can spread.
To illustrate how cross-contamination works, Lixey put on a pair of gloves and used paint while pretending to be at the grocery store.

She then used a piece of cardboard that would represent a cell phone that she would theoretically carry in her pocket while at the supermarket.
Lixey then imagines that she takes a roll of toilet paper off the shelves.
That roll of toilet paper contains germs that would be left on her hands, though Lixey said it would be a mistake to think that just because she is wearing gloves she is safe.
‘I’m walking along and then my phone rings!’ she said.
‘I have a text message from my husband telling me to get more chicken,’ she said.
‘We’re having chicken for dinner.’
Lixey showed with her paint-stained fingers how the germs that originated from the roll of toilet paper were now spread all over her cell phone.
‘So let me text him back: “OK, honey, I got it, let me get us some chicken”.’
Lixey then continued on her theoretical shopping trip through the grocery aisles, touching more items that left even more germs on her hands.
Lixey said cell phones are common collectors of germs and that using them frequently makes people vulnerable to infection

‘I just keep touching everything,’ she said.
But then she demonstrated how her nose would start to itch, so she brought her germ-infested hand close to her face.
Then she showed her phone ringing again, requiring her to pick up the device and continue to spread more germs on her face.
Lixey noted that she then exposed herself to more germs by touching more items as she went about paying for her groceries, using cash, putting back the cart, and opening the car door by pulling on the handles.

So what does one do with gloves after finishing their shopping trip?
‘You take them off appropriately and they belong in the trash!’ she said.
‘Instead of putting them in the parking lot next to your vehicle, please put them in the trash.’

Lixey said that people mistakenly believe they are safe in their cars after removing the gloves and supposedly driving home with clean hands.
But then the phone rings, and she picks up her germ-infested device that was contaminated with bacteria from the items in the grocery store.
Then, as she displayed her ungloved hands with the paint stains meant to represent germs, she said: ‘Look, this is called cross-contamination.
‘There’s no point in wearing gloves if you’re not going to wash your hands every time you touch something.
‘There’s no point, friends.’
She continued: ‘Do whatever makes you feel safe, but do remember, there is some science here.
‘And all this fear is just manifesting people into being crazy and not acting very smart.
‘Go ahead and wear gloves but you need to wash your hands all the time.’
She added: ‘Don’t touch your face! Don’t touch your dirty, disgusting phone.’
Finally, she said: ‘Throw your gloves in the trash! They do not belong on the parking lot on the ground.’
