Authorities arrest Delaware school bus driver for vehicular assault with a bus carrying at least 30 children

Delaware State Police arrested a school bus driver Tuesday and charged him with multiple counts of reckless endangerment and vehicular assault.

What are the details?

According to WMDT-TV, the incident took place Jan. 28 when Delaware State Police learned that 65-year-old Granville Lawson intentionally slammed on the brakes in order to stop kids from getting out of their seats.
At least 11 children were injured as a result of Lawson's actions including bruising, abrasions, and concussion-like symptoms.
According to a Delaware State Police news release, "The remaining 19 victims did not report any injury, however, all reported the reckless manner in which Lawson intentionally stopped the bus."
Before abruptly stopping, Lawson reportedly announced on the bus's PA system, "See what I can do when you get out of your seats." WMDT reported that "Lawson made no announcements regarding children being out of their seats before slamming on the brakes."
The bus was carrying about 30 students ranging in age from 6 to 11 years, as well as a 77-year-old bus aide.
Authorities report that "10 of the parents whose child did not sustain injury declined prosecution in lieu of disciplinary action by the school."

What was the driver charged with?

Police took Lawson into custody and charged him with nine counts of second-degree reckless endangerment and 11 counts of third-degree vehicular assault.
Lawson was arraigned before the Justice of the Peace Court and later released upon his own recognizance.
Indian River School District spokesman David Maull said the district informed parents of the incident on the same day it took place, according to Delaware Online. Maull also encouraged parents to take their children to the emergency room for examination "if they had any concerns about injuries that may have been sustained."
Maull added that the authorities were immediately informed of Lawson's actions.
