Woman blasts couple for charging guests $125 EACH to attend their wedding - only for them to serve hot dog slices before running out of food

A woman who agreed to pay to attend a wedding which ran out of appetizers and party favors has sparked a lengthy debate over the etiquette of expecting guests to cover wedding costs.
Writing on the Facebook group that's it, I'm wedding shaming, the US-based woman explained how she had paid $250 (£200) as an admission fee for her and her husband to attend a friend's nuptials.
Complaining that the catering ran low on food and their table was missing party favors, the woman confessed she went to the wedding because she had committed to attending the big day before she was aware of the fee.
The post received a stream of comments from members of the forum, with many claiming they wouldn't attend a wedding if they were expected to pay.
Explaining the situation, the woman wrote: 'I was recently invited to a wedding where we had to pay an admission fee of $125 each for my husband and I for a total of $250. Only to not get much in the way of appetizers (they ran out half way to our table), some of which included hot dogs slices.'

She continued: 'The only thing they didn't run out of that I was able to eat was from the cheese and grapes platter. Furthermore, our table was the only one with no party favors since they also ran out of those.
'And the main course that they claim was salmon was really suspect looking and cold to the touch so I decided to pass. The only saving grace was the open bar, but I was on some medication and couldn't drink anyway. So I had the most expensive Pepsi known to man: 2 for $125.'
Addressing people who might ask why she went, the woman continued: 'There are other factors but more specifically, she caught me off guard.
'I committed to going as soon as I found out about the wedding, but before I saw it required payment. But I won't get caught slipping again.'

She added that she wanted to wear a white dress because she 'figured it was my wedding too since I paid', but admitted several people told her it would be in 'bad taste' so she 'let it go'.
'Although I did have some others who encouraged me to go all out even suggesting I wear a tiara and I was quite tempted,' she went on.
'Unless you're Beyoncé, please don't charge people to attend your raggedy wedding, especially if the ceiling is leaking and some of the letters outside of the venue walls have fallen off.'
A flood of responses to the thread slammed the couple's decision to charge for the wedding and questioned the woman's decision to attend.

One person wrote: 'Why in the world did you pay? Just as much your fault for being a sucker and paying. I would have said hell no! So incredibly rude to ask people to pay. I can't believe they had any attendance at all. Wow! The nerve.'
Another said: 'You don't have to go just because you said you would, before knowing you had to pay. Completely shameworthy on the couple's part, but I don't really feel sympathy since you decided to go ahead and pay to witness this train wreck.'
Many contributors slammed the couple for running out of food despite charging guests to attend.
One person wrote: 'Oh my god. $250 just to attend? That's more than I usually spend on gifts and this couple is expecting you to shell it out just to attend. It's not a charity event, you don't charge people to attend.
'And then, on top of that, to not have enough food/appetizers for all your tables AND to be serving freaking hot dog slices... I'd be so upset.'
Another asked: 'How do you run out of food when you make people pay to go?'

A third added: 'I'm not blaming you at all, your friend is a total b****, but just because you said yes to going doesn't mean you had to go lol. This is the one of very few exceptions that wouldn't have made you an a** for no showing after RSVP yes.
'The moment she said there was a FEE of any type was the moment you should have said, "I'm sorry something came up''.'
However, a number of people claimed they wouldn't mind paying to attend a wedding if the food was satisfactory and they aren't expected to also bring gifts.
One person wrote: 'I don't hate the idea of paying to go to a wedding if it's clearly in lieu of a gift. But if your guests are paying for their own food at least make sure there's enough freaking food!'
Another said: 'Honestly, unpopular opinion but I don't care if people charge me for the food/wedding/entrance fees as long as they don't expect a gift. But more than $100 is wayyyyyy too much, especially in this case.'
