Put on your shocked faces: Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is out there trying to rally support for Chelsea Manning. And taking some liberties with reality, naturally:

First off, about that “solitary confinement” thing, “torture” may be in the eye of the beholder.
No, solitary confinement is not torture. If Manning wants out of solitary confinement, he needs to answer the grand jury's questions. It's really that simple.

And in Manning’s case, is it even really solitary confinement?
Dana Lawhorne, the sheriff in Alexandria where Manning is held:
"Our facility does not have 'solitary confinement' and inmates housed in admin segregation for safety and security reasons still have access to social visits, books, recreation, and break time outside their cells"

She also appears to be ignoring an important aspect of Manning’s imprisonment:
Manning is in protective custody inside of a jail. She’s sounding as if he is being punished but in reality the reason why Manning is in PC is because he is a danger to himself and others based on his “celebrity status” as a former soldier who gave away top military information

Even if you want to argue that admin segregation is equivalent to solitary confinement, the whole reason she is being put there is clearly because she would be in danger w the general population (not as punishment). The idea that it constitutes torture is baseless nonsense.

And it’s not as if Manning is completely helpless in this situation. Why is AOC so hell-bent on painting stunning and brave Chelsea Manning as a victim?
Chelsea went to jail for refusing to answer questions from a federal grand jury. If Chelsea would simply answer their questions, she would be able to go home afterwards. Why not suggest that?

Because then AOC might have to acknowledge that Chelsea Manning is no hero.

Chelsea is not by any measure a “whistle blower.” She dumped data indiscriminately that endangered the lives of thousands over her personal issues. That’s why she was prosecuted. Everything else is utter theater and rewriting of history. Please don’t perpetuate this myth.
