Bill Nye and AOC Teamed Up at Hipster Music Festival… The Comments Are Brutal

By age they’re more than 30 years apart.
By politics, they’re allies in the cause of whipping up hysteria over the impending collapse of civilization thanks to “climate change.”
And when it comes to the scorn they’re getting on social media, Bill Nye “the Science Guy” and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez might as well be joined at the hip.
When noted global warmist and climate change alarmist Nye tweeted out a picture of himself and New York’s currently most infamous federal office holder (sorry, Chuck Schumer), he probably expected plaudits all around.
After all, in Nye’s telling, he and Ocasio-Cortez are on the side of the angels.
“AOC gets it,” Nye posted on Twitter on Saturday, showing the two together at the hipster South by Southwest music festival in Austin, Texas. “She sees that fear is dividing us. We can address income inequality. We can address climate change, if we get together and get to work.”
To the barricades, comrades!
AOC gets it. She sees that fear is dividing us. We can address income inequality. We can address climate change, if we get together and get to work. @AOC
It’s easy to see why Nye might be trying to get himself linked in the public mind to Ocasio-Cortez.
She’s a 29-year-old rising star of the country’s progressive movement, sharp-tongued and apparently sharp-witted, with a growing national following.
He, on the other hand, is a 63-year-old, somewhat doddery kind of geeky guy who is less, shall we say, easy on the eyes.
But judging by the backlash the tweet received on social media, Mr. Nye might want to be a little more careful about the company he keeps.
Some of the responses were scathing.
Ironic considering you and AOC build your careers on terrifying people that global warming is going to kill us all.
Mr. Nye, you were my childhood hero. You are a big part of why I decided to spend 10 years at university studying science and math. But here you are with the literal personification of stupidity, giving the middle finger to science and logic like you have for the past decade.
Not everyone agrees with you two. America is fine the way it is, and it will get better once you lot stops taxing the middle class into the ground
That last one sums it up pretty well.
Nye isn’t a “scientist” at all. He holds a mechanical engineering degree from Cornell University, according to Biography.com.
He’s parlayed that and a professorial persona into a successful career that has turned ever more progressive politically.
Ocasio Cortez, on the other hand, does hold a bachelor’s degree in the discipline she publicly professes.
She has a degree in economics and international relations from Boston University, according to The Boston Globe.
But that doesn’t mean she actually understands what makes the world economy run. Plenty of economists are academically qualified – The New York Times’ Paul Krugman leaps to mind – but are still unabashed apostles of centralized planning.
Apparently, a century’s worth of history that shows government-run societies on the socialist/communist model inevitably lead to catastrophe – and deaths in hundreds of millions — from Stalin’s Soviet Union to Mao’s China and the killing fields of Cambodia — isn’t enough to convince them that there’s something seriously wrong with the idea. (Today’s gradual disintegration of Venezuela isn’t something liberals can intelligently discuss.)
So, the United States, which defeated the Soviet Union in the Cold War, is once again facing a socialist danger – this time from a major party in its own government, being represented by a 29-year-old who wants to impose a Green New Deal on the country without regard for the disastrous consequences.
And an aging former star of what was basically children’s television is trying to link his own image to hers in an attempt to prove to Americans that adults actually believe what the Democratic Party is peddling these days.
He’ll have some takers, of course.
There were more than a few gushing responses to Nye’s post that were the kind of affirmation he was no doubt looking for.
But there were many, many skeptics, who are no more taken in by the television “Science Guy” than they are by the photogenic representative from New York.
As odd couples go, Ocasio-Cortez and Nye might deserve each other in some ways.

But the American people, and the future of the country, deserve much, much better than both.
